My story

I am a communications professional with 20+ years’ experience in corporate comms, employee engagement, and journalism.

Several years ago, I was burning out regularly. Stress was taking its toll on my body, and I could no longer ignore it.

I had sleep issues, my skin was irritated and dry, I was lacking energy, I got angry easily, migraines were frequent, and I experienced gastroenteritis monthly.

Realising that I needed change, in 2019 I started a Bachelor of Health Science (BHSc) in Nutritional and Dietetic Medicine.

But life challenged me in more ways than one. In early 2020 COVID-19 arrived, then in December dad died of chronic heart failure.

The grief was debilitating. It was a repeat of emotions I felt when my brother died in his sleep, 10 years earlier.

In 2021 on campus in Brisbane, a lecturer and then a nutrition student took my blood pressure. It was very high, so I was referred to a doctor.

Two days later, after getting my blood pressure checked, I was advised by the doctor that my blood pressure was dangerously high. I was at risk of having a stroke at any moment. So, I was sent to hospital.

Thankfully I was ok. But I needed to make diet and lifestyle changes. Urgently.

I share my story because most of us ignore our signs and symptoms until we get diagnosed with an illness or disease.
